What really goes on at a porn shoot

A sneak peek behind the scenes of a porn set.

By Emmeline Peaches

If you’re reading this then, chances are, you agree with us in thinking that porn is pretty great.

It’s also pretty complicated too.

Not necessarily in a bad way (quite the opposite) but, still, a lot of time, effort, and energy goes in to pornography that often goes unnoticed.

We don’t often think about what goes in to the smut that we click on to for our personal enjoyment, which is absolutely fine in the moment. After all, who really wants to consider the intricacies of how a roster of employees managed to get the right lighting to do a performer’s orgasm-face full justice mid climax themselves?

But sometimes it’s fun to think about these things and to ‘peak behind the curtains’ as it were to discover just how the stunning individuals of a scene got from shoot to screen for our literal viewing pleasure.

So today we thought we’d give you a little glimpse in to some of the things that might happen behind the scenes at a pornography shoot.

The disclaimer to this is that not all shoots are created equal – different content creators will have different budgets, approaches, and attitudes – but these are just a few insights that we think you might find interesting to discover.

Lights

We may have joked about lighting a climax above but, in all seriousness, elements of a shoot such as lighting, location, sound, space, etc. are all very important and need to be properly considered and undertaken during a shoot.

Logistically, any set needs to have enough space for the crew and for all of the equipment needed for the shoot (cameras, lights, audio, power sources, and so on).

Speaking of crew, there is one, and it extends far beyond the director and performers.

Depending on the shoot you’ll also have a make-up crew, camera crew, photographers, audio crew, tech crew, runners, and even a catering crew.

This list is by no means extensive either.

Basically a porn shoot is like any other filming shoot and that reflects in the amount of people involved and what goes on in making sure that scenes get filmed.

As such, most people involved are pretty much taking the attitude you would take doing any other technical filming job, meaning that working on a porn shoot isn’t exactly a ‘sexy’ working environment either despite sex being the primary focus of the shoot.

Sure, the end result is immensely rewarding and aims to arouse, but it’s near impossible to feel all hot and bothered when making sure you’re holding up a lighting rig to get the best shot possible for that end product (at least in a sexy way).

Camera

Speaking of such logistical considerations, a lot of people don’t consider the environment of a porn shoot and just how artificial it is compared to conventional sexual settings.

Most experienced performers are used to it and consider it a standard part of the job. Newcomers, however, often observe that one of the most difficult parts of acclimatising to pornography is getting used to just how many people and how much equipment is around you.

Imagine this: You’re in the mood for some fun with your partner/s and you decide it’s time to play. You’re in the zone, they lie themselves down on the bed, the atmosphere is tense in all the best ways then, suddenly, Click! A camera shutter goes off as one of the supplemental photos or thumbnails are taken for the shoot.

Alternatively someone shuffles by to reposition and you catch them out of the corner of your eye, or you glance up for a moment and spot one of the crew munching on a sandwich because, hey, sometimes people get peckish.

Even helpful things such as being offered water or more lubrication are just things that you wouldn’t expect during conventional sex and they really do set pornography aside in terms of sexual experiences (and experiences in general).

It really is the new normal for everyone involved, but thinking about it from an outsider’s perspective makes it all seem pretty surreal.

Action!

And we’re not just talking about the sexy kind.

By now it should be pretty apparent that a pornography shoot is far more than just what’s seen on the screen. Shoots are living, dynamic environments, full of many different employees, all with different personalities and approaches, trying to reach a common goal.

If you’re in a good shoot then this is one of the greatest things ever.

Why? Well, for much the same reason as any positive working environment is.

If everyone involved loves what they’re doing then the atmosphere is such a friendly, focused, but also fun one to be a part of.

Sure, there’s a certain immunisation to the nature of the work most of the time but we’re all human and we certainly don’t begrudge the occasional innuendo or tongue-in-cheek joke about sex.

Sometimes some of the best humour and the greatest laughter can come from sex scenes going wrong, or technical difficulties, and almost everyone involved can have a good laugh at the situation.

After a shoot people get together, natter, keep things friendly and (on some sets) enjoy communal drinks and meals which really are as informal and enjoyable as the best friendly get-togethers.

When things go right everyone feels accomplished and high-fives or fist bumps might even be traded. Then, of course, there’s the real ‘blooper reel’ moments that will only ever be reserved for the fond memories of those on set during that day…

Final Cut

Thus concludes our brief little exploration in to just what happens behind the scenes of a porn shoot and some of the logistical considerations involved.

We hope that you’ve enjoyed these insights and that you feel a bit more in-the-know about what it takes to bring you the content that brings you to climax.

As for the particular details of our sets? Well, we’ll leave that up
