How to spot feminist porn

Female pleasure is important, but men are still getting blow jobs too.

By Rebecca Dane

It's the month of International Women’s Day, so it felt fitting to talk about how porn can be feminist and what even constitutes feminist porn.

If you’re reading this… then you’re probably pretty familiar with porn considering what site you’re currently on. If you’ve just stumbled across this article, then read this article first and then go and explore the rest of Dusk TV. I promise you won’t regret browsing through this site, just take note that it is very, very NSFW.

So what makes porn feminist?

It’s actually incredibly difficult to define because everyone has a different definition of feminism. We’ll get to the core of it, but there is something that needs to be clarified first.

Feminists have many different views on what feminism is and how it is portrayed. I know some feminists that think blowjobs are the anti-thesis of feminism because they gain no pleasure from it. I know other feminists who crave giving blow jobs because it makes them feel so powerful. I know a bunch of feminists that fall somewhere between those two extremes.

I’m using that example because a lot of people tend to believe that feminist porn requires there to be zero “violence” or “submissive” acts, but that simply is not true. There can be incredibly feminist porn that shows choking, extreme bondage, humiliation, etc.

Whatever is portrayed in porn - whether you enjoy watching it or not - can be incredibly feminist. So how do we tell? It’s whatever is happening behind the scenes.

1. The Gaze

Much of the mainstream porn is filmed from “the male gaze.” Not just porn actually, but many movies are filmed from the make gaze. If you think of the difference between Catwoman (with Halle Berry) and Wonder Woman (with Gal Gadot)… you might understand the importance of who is “gazing” upon the scenes.

The director is essential to feminist porn making. Having a true feminist behind the camera is going to make a huge impact on how the entire video is recorded and presented.

2. The Bodies

Mainstream porn tends to represent the same types of bodies on camera, again and again. Feminism is about inclusivity and equality, and that extends to the range of people that are seen on screen – and I don’t just mean as a fetishization. I mean as a true participant of the porn. Are there diverse people in the videos and are they all representing more than just their skin tone, body parts, or clothing size?

3. The Pleasure

Does the porn include female pleasure? Many mainstream porn videos are all about pleasing the males in the room. It doesn’t even really matter what scenario the porn might be showing – it can be one-on-one, a threesome, a more-some, etc - if the women in the video are being used as props (and that’s not part of the story) then it’s not taking the women into consideration. It doesn’t always have to be all about female pleasure, but feminist porn is more likely to have a balance of pleasure than some mainstream porn videos. Keep in mind that women experience pleasure in a variety of ways, so this can be a tricky thing to spot. Don’t consider it on its own – incorporate the idea of pleasure with the other items on this list.

4. The Stars

Love it or hate it – social media gives us a good look at who is involved in porn movies. You don’t have to dig that deep to see if the stars were treated well by a porn company. If someone has a positive experience, they’ll often talk about it.

Similarly, you can easily see how the porn stars interact with each other. Do their Tweets reflect ideas that you believe in too or are they spewing hate?

Behind-the-scenes videos are growing in popularity, and they give you a glimpse into the atmosphere of that particular production.

5. The Pay

Feminist porn means that the stars get compensated for their work! People should be compensated for their work because they are providing a service and entertainment. If you come across a free site that aggregates content – then it probably doesn’t support feminist porn. Find out how sites compensate for video views and vote with your dollars.

Sex work, including porn, is real work. Let’s make sure to include our porn stars when we talk about feminism. Let’s keep them safe, and keep them getting paid.
