How to celebrate Valentine's Day solo

I’ve always kind of felt that Valentine’s Day wasn’t something to be celebrated. I didn’t totally see the need to buy a partner gifts or go to an over-crowded restaurant just to prove that you love them.

By Rebecca Dane from A Couple of Kinks

I was a big fan of just ignoring the whole day altogether – regardless if I was in a relationship or not.

However, the more time I spent single, the more I realized what Valentine’s Day SHOULD be about! It should be a yearly reminder of self-care, or relationship-care. The winter months can be pretty rough, and smack in the middle of it is a reminder to take some time to pause and breathe.

In a relationship, that can mean finding time to cuddle, have a long walk with deep chats or schedule some fun new sex stuff. Spending the night doing something together can be a nice change of pace for these hectic months.

When not in a relationship, that can mean spending time taking care of yourself. Yes, truly taking a break from hectic life and just paying attention to what your body and mind need. Please not that even if you are in a relationship, you can do all of these things too! Self-care is essential for everyone, and Valentine’s Day is a perfect excuse to indulge yourself!

Of course, we have some ideas for you!

1. Host a Party

If you’re feeling social, then you should host a get-together. You can round up all your single friends, or you can just roundup all of your friends for a fun night. This year Valentine’s Day is on a Tuesday, which can be a perfect night for happy hour at your house! Surround yourself with people you enjoy spending time with. There’s nothing greater than filling your halls with laughter.

2. Remember Your Hobbies

Devote tonight to one of your hobbies! Sometimes our work schedules can interfere with our creativity. Spend tonight doing something artistic that you love! You should knit a sweater or paint a landscape or pick up your guitar or test out new makeup. Whatever your hobby might be, set some time aside to focus on re-connecting with your creative side. If you seem to be missing a hobby, then tonight is the perfect time to research something that might interest you.

3. Go For a Run

Go for a run or a swim or a bike ride if it isn’t too cold out. You can even just go for a nice long walk with your favourite playlist. Getting your body moving is a great way to spend part of the evening. Tonight is all about taking care of yourself, and some physical activity and fresh air can help you do exactly that. You can even go for a walk to explore a new part of the city! Take tonight to remind yourself of the importance of your inner health.

4. Netflix and Wine

Alternatively, you can literally do nothing. Buy yourself a bottle of wine (or a box of wine if you want) and some snacks to last you all night. Then find an entire new series that you can watch all night long. You don’t need to be productive tonight at all. If your body and mind need a break, then sometimes the perfect location is your couch. There’s nothing here to feel guilty about - tonight is all about you!

5. Masturbate, masturbate, masturbate!

How could this NOT make it on the list? Of course you can masturbate any night of the week, but if you’re spending the night alone, then use it as an excuse to pleasure yourself. You can even splurge to buy a new toy that you want to try out. Masturbating is a great way to feel good and relieve some stress – it comes highly recommended!

Overall, just make sure that Valentine’s Day is used as a reminder to focus on your needs and desires. Take a break from your busy routine and do something you absolutely love. Happy February 14th!
