How to celebrate sex in bed

Bored by sex in bed? Allow us to make our case in defence of the bed and the amazing role that it can play!

By Emmeline Peaches

The bedroom has traditionally been the space for sexual activity for many years and, as a result, a lot of people are now trying to break free from it and explore new spaces. Sex outdoors is a perfect example of this – acting as an appealing option for those who want to have as extreme a sexual contrast as they possibly can.

Such situations are defined as ‘liberating’ which, when you think about it, is kind of a backhanded insult to the humble bedroom and the bed that resides within in. Sure, the bed might be a familiar space but there’s a reason for that – it’s a tried and tested area for sexual success.

So, for anyone who feels like excitement doesn’t being until you move away from the pillows and duvet allow us to make our case in defence of the bed and the amazing role that it can play in bed.

Why Have Sex In/On A Bed?

Admittedly, sex on a bed does have a few downsides. By sheer virtue of its size, weight, and location, the bed offers a non-portable, restricted, and very set area with which to try and explore your sexual desires. Sex is rarely something that we want to keep to such a singular space, place, and position so, in this way, you might feel like the bed isn’t offering what you need.

If you’ve got in to a habit and built the bed in to a very specific sexual routine then you might also just naturally develop a specific attitude about bed and, if we’re being frank, loose some of your creativity around how to make the best of that piece of potential sex furniture.

But you read correctly there – the bed can easily be one of the biggest and most accessible pieces of sex furniture that you have to hand, and it doesn’t even require an additional purchase.

Why is this the case?

Beds provide a safe and secure space: Counterintuitive as it may seem, one of the most important aspects of sex is that everyone involved feels safe, secure, and comfortable with the situation. Yes – sex should be comfortable (to some extent).

Most people would agree that a bed is probably one of the most comfortable spaces available. Not only is it just naturally designed to be soft, laid upon, and springy when met with motion, but the bed is usually located in an area that other people rarely frequent or intrude upon. Ideal for creating the perfect sexual ambience.

Beds can facilitate different positions with ease: Again, this is a piece of furniture which is deliberately designed to comfortably accommodate human weight and body usage. This means that most beds are presented at an optimal height, softness, and weight-capability for people.

The same can not necessarily be said about a hard kitchen counter, a table, or the varied landscape of nature.

Because beds are presented at a certain height they don’t just need to be laid upon to have fun either. You can use the bed to lean on, have one partner standing one lying, hang off the edges, and so much more. The only limit is your imagination.

Beds allow for spontaneity: Are you mid-fuck and fancy throwing your partner roughly and down to playfully change things up? With a bed this is an immediate and safe option.

Are you really craving doggy-style but tend to like something to help lift the hips or knees? Pillows are readily to hand on a bed.

Oh, and let’s not get in to the exceptional fun that can be had when a bed has a headboard.

When you start looking at the bed as a sexual playground then creative and playful scenarios easily come to mind and can be just as effortlessly implemented.

Sex in bed helps you sleep: Yup. Science has proven it. But only if you both achieve pleasure, so never skimp on the satisfaction of everyone involved.

In a survey from Australian sleep researchers 64% or respondents said that they were able to achieve improved sleep after having a good session in the best pre-rest.

So, if you’re struggling with sleep then you might just need to reconsider your relationship with the bed (and those that you share it with).

So There You have It!

We could list more reasons – such as how sex in bed supports joints, or how it helps prevent feeling cold during your sex session – but then we’d be here for an entire thesis!

Instead, here are a few tips to help you get the best out of your bed for sex:

  • Make sure that you’ve got a decent mattress. If your mattress is uncomfortable then your sex will be too, and your sleep for that matter, so invest in the best for your sleep and your sex!
  • Keep the sheets fresh (and perhaps waterproof). No one wants to start sex already smelling sweat and other natural human aromas, not to mention potential hygiene concerns. Always keep your sheets fresh and clean. If you know you’re a squirter (or like to get messy) then consider investing in some purpose-made waterproof sheets to make your experience even more delightful.
  • When travelling don’t just see your hotel bed as somewhere to rest your head at the end of the day: examine its sexual potential and consider how you might use it to have some fun. Every new bed is a new opportunity. And, hey, if you find you like this then why not take some time to rent out a hotel in your area every now and then? A little retreat away from home in your hometown can be a dream.
  • Select the right sheets for the job. It’s a rare niche that feels filled with passion at the idea of having sex on top of a slice of pepperoni.

The Takeaway

Do anything too much and in the same way and you’ll soon find it losing its lustre.

You may find that the bed currently bores you (quite literally) to sleep, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Reinvent and recreate the bed and it may soon be you best sexual ally (then, afterwards you can get a good night’s sleep).
