Porn Film Festival Berlin 2013

Porn Film Festival Berlijn 2013

The last weekend of September saw the long-awaited eight edition of the legendary Porn Film Festival Berlin. As always, Dusk! was there too. The highlights for us this year.

It seemed that the weather in Berlin was just as enthusiastic about the Porn Film Festival as we were! The sultry evenings and warm sunshine made it feel like summer again. And the heat was definitely on during the festival, with this year’s themes including BDSM and fetish. The Berlin Porn Film Festival is a unique event at which independent filmmakers from all over the world exhibit their work. These are almost always films that are not generally available on the mainstream circuit and which highlight sexuality in their own unique fashion. Contrary to what you might expect from the name, the festival is not just simply about porno, but includes special documentaries, experimental short films and educational films. During the festival, we had the enviable task of seeking out the ‘pearls of porna’… and we found them!

Dusk! Academy
Kara&Devon screening in BerlinIt was also the first year that Dusk! had its very own film on the programme. The film watched by the public in the Female Porn segment was 'Kara & Devon'. This short film was made exclusively for the Dusk! Academy by Australian filmmaker Michelle Flynn. The Dusk! Academy is a podium for young and upcoming filmmakers to show their work to a varied and curious audience. All Dusk! Academy films are based on the characteristics that appeal to Dusk! watchers; real sex, pleasure, intimacy and a focus on female enjoyment. Festival visitors in Berlin were enthusiastic about ‘Kara & Devon’, as were the professionals, who praised it highly.  And we’re glad about that, because there is plenty more on its way from the Dusk! Academy. In the Female Porn programme, we were all completely knocked out by 'The Silent Guy', a film made entirely from the woman’s perspective. The man in this woman’s bed indulges her to the full, without saying a single word. A little patience, and before long you too will be able to see this sexy short on Dusk!

Jiz Lee

Dusk! interviews with Jiz LeeUp and coming filmmakers were able to attend workshops to hone their talents.  One of the workshop hosts was porna filmmaker Jennifer Lyon Bell, but American performer Jiz Lee also gave a workshop entitled ‘How to have ‘real’ sex in porn’. Real sex in porn is a subject close to the heart of us Duskers of course! We are really curious as to whether this will produce any new porna filmmakers; hopefully we’ll find out at next year’s festival. Jiz Lee was also Performer in Focus this year, so we were able to see and admire her on the big screen in various roles, such as the short film Dear Jiz, by Ms Naughty, an intimate and almost fragile film shot in black and white. The film is a combination of a silent masturbation scene backed by a soundtrack of Jiz reading aloud letters from her fans. Many people, including us, were highly impressed by the film. Dear Jiz is a marvellous example of how hugely diverse porno and porna can be.

Kink
Kopfkino was a documentary that fitted in perfectly with the main theme of the festival. The film follows twelve kinky female professionals ranging from dominating to submissive. During an exuberant dinner, sitting at a long table, they relate their experiences in what is for many the unknown world of BDSM. It is a beautifully shot film about the bizarre wishes of clients, exciting sessions and gorgeous clothing. It is a very special and surprisingly humorous film that shows just how many women make a conscious and enthusiastic choice to make their living as a sex worker. This year’s opening film was also dominated by whips and leather. The documentary KINK (produced by Hollywood hunk James Franco) gives us a look behind the scenes at Kink.com, the largest producer of BDSM porno in the world.  Performers, camera people and set builders, everyone gets to have their say, talking frankly about their experiences at this mega company in San Francisco.  And the close-up camera work makes you feel as if you are actually part of the scene.

Discoveries
Wolf Hudson and Aiden StarrGreat new talent discovered this year included Wolf Hudson and Aiden Starr, the makers of Wolfhudsonisbad.com, a website that was launched several years ago and with Wolf Hudson as the central figure. He makes heterosexual porno in his own, unique fashion. The site had already been praised during the Feminist Porn Awards due to its style, which is more original and varied than most mainstream porno.  During their Filmmaker in Focus programme, both filmmakers talked enthusiastically about their work and proved that you don’t necessarily have to be female to make exciting porno/porna! So beware, James Dean, when it comes to Wolf Hudson, you’ve got genuinely hot competition!
